Visit Highlights
Air-conditioning system is the biggest electricity consuming facility in commercial buildings in Hong Kong. According to Hong Kong Energy Statistics Annual Report 2013, the largest category was the commercial users, taking up 66.6% of the total local consumption.

In this visit, we will arrive at the District Cooling System (DSC) Plant of Kai Tak Development (KTD). The DCS at KTD is a large scale centralized air-conditioning system. It utilizes sea water to produce chilled water at the central plants and distributes the chilled water to user buildings for air-conditioning purpose.

According to EMSD information, the DCS project includes the construction of a northern chiller plant, a southern chiller plant, a seawater pump room, sea water intake and outfall, laying of seawater pipes and chilled water piping network, and installation of connection facilities at user buildings at KTD. The cooling capacity of the DCS is about 81,000 RT/284 MW for serving the non-domestic air-conditioned floor area of about 1.73 million m2, equivalent to a cooling supply for 40 nos. of 30-storey high commercial buildings. The total length of water pipes is around 39 km. By estimation, DCS can result in an energy saving of 20% and35% respectively when compared with standalone water-cooled systems and air-cooled systems.

If typhoon signal no. 8 or black rainstorm signal is in force and still hoisted after 6:30am of 13 Dec 2014, the technical visit would be cancelled without further arrangement or notification.

Insurance
Limited accident insurance will be particularly provided for Student Members at the venue whilst passenger insurance will be separately provided by the shuttle service provider for all passengers. If deemed necessary, participants are encouraged to arrange their own insurance for protection against any accident coverage for the whole technical visit.
